Modern American society seems biased to those that are righthanded, but Lawton MacArthur High School sophomore, Cooper Watson proves otherwise. His ability to play golf as a “lefty,” or a left-handed player, yields impressive results on the golf course. Having played golf for 13 years, Cooper has played the sport longer than many other opponents his age.
Asked what it has taken to become successful at golf, Cooper did not hesitate, “It
has taken dedication to be successful. It also has meant practicing even when there have been times that I did not want to practice.” When asked what Cooper’s favorite part of playing golf, Cooper stated, “My favorite part of playing golf is hitting good shots.”
There are many memories made on and off the golf course, but for Cooper one particular memory stands out the most. Cooper reflected, “My favorite memory of golf is shooting 66 at Lake Hefner Golf Course, after bogeying on the first two holes.”
In terms of who has inspired Cooper the most thus far, he looks to his family. “My dad is who has inspired me the most because he got me into golf.” Many high school athletes have a professional athlete that they admire. For Wyatt, that person is a NCAA Collegiate golfer, Drew Goodman, who golfs for The University of Oklahoma.
Cooper stated, “I enjoy watching him because the ball comes off his club different than any other player I have seen.” As to what it means to represent the community and his school as a golfer, Cooper stated, “It means to act proper because you never know who is watching and you do not want to be a bad representative for your community or school.”
Even though Cooper is only a sophomore, he certainly has plans of higher education on his radar. Cooper elated, “I plan on going to college, and playing NCAA Division 1 Golf.
