MacArthur Cheer – Presented by Bank of Commerce

By Chance Burk

After a successful year in 2023, the MacArthur cheer squad plans to capitalize on the success and grow from it. The cheer squad placed 3rd place at game day regionals and 5th place at game day state last season. The cheer squad also had a member, Alexis Moore, recognized with All-State honors. With only seven returning members, the cheer squad has had to work extra hard to get where they are today.

The combination of leadership, communication, and hard work has turned the MacArthur cheer squad into a well-oiled machine. Kathy Sauders is the leader of
the squad and has very high expectations going into this season. “This team is closer (to reaching their goals) than past squads,” said Coach Sauders.

Their main goal is to finish 3rd place or better at game day state. After finishing 5th place last season and working all year to better themselves, the squad’s high expectations are becoming more realistic by the minute. When it comes to player
leadership, Coach Sauders has high regard for senior Thalia Henry. “She brings consistency, positive communication, and is an awesome leader,” said Coach Sauders. Thalia is a four-year member and the captain of the squad. She is a role model for the underclassman and is a considerable reason why the team is where it is today.

Out of all of the challenges and obstacles that the squad has faced, building team unity has been the toughest of them all. With only seven returning members, team chemistry took a crucial hit. The team had to relearn cheers, stunts, and cadences with the new additions to the team. Although the team had to put in a lot of extra work, a lot of good came from it. Not only did they unite as a team, but they
also came closer together than expected. “Our members believe in each other and are willing to do their part to meet all our goals,” said Coach Sauders.

With the experience of the coaching staff and the upperclassmen, the team will be
well-led going into next season. Combining the leadership with the communication, team unity, and skill of this season’s cheer squad, their goals are very reachable. The cheer squad has bought into the system and each other. After starting over with
a brand-new team, the cheer squad will look to turn their setbacks into success.
