Lawton’s Sherry Copeland – “Talk of the Tailgate” presented by Taco Bueno

For six years, Sherry Copeland has honed her craft as a cheerleader to become one of the senior leaders of the squad at Lawton High School. Her passion for her team and teammates makes her the “talk of the tailgate” at Wolverine football games.

“I love all of the personalities on the team and how it is so diverse and the love they have for cheer. It’s what makes us a team,” Sherry said.

Being on the sidelines for the games are special moments for Sherry and her teammates.

“It’s so special because the season is so short and the energy every Friday night is what our team runs off of,” Sherry said.

The senior said there are so many great memories she has shared with her team that it’s tough to think of only one. But the first one that came to mind happened her junior year.

“My junior year we started to do the cupid shuffle when we were up by over 20 points in the game,” said Sherry.

As a student-athlete at Lawton High, Sherry said she is focused in the classroom and on her future.

“LHS is such a great place to go to school because the faculty really cares about you and the amazing student leadership that helps spread big red pride throughout the school,” Sherry said. “I plan to attend Florida A&M University and get a degree in biology.”

It will be bitter sweet leaving the sideline for the final time.

“I’ll miss cheering with my cheer mates and the energy Friday night brings,” said Sherry.
