Hobart’s Wyatt Shelburne – Baseball Spotlight – Presented by Bar S

Wyatt Shelburne is a 17 year old junior second baseman for the Hobart Bearcats, and at the time of his interview, he and he team were still going strong in the post-season.

“We’re still playing,” Shelburne said. “Our season isn’t over. We’re 15-10. We started off rough in a tournament after having only two practices, but once we got time to practice our season changed and we got on the winning side of things. We finished second in our district. It’s fun. We have a great team, and we have a lot of fun while we play and compete.”

Shelburne said he has a number of shoutouts and influences when it comes to playing the game he’s loved since he started playing in the third grade.

“I want to shoutout my coaches, parents and my teammates,” he said. “They all push me, and make me give it my all every time I play. I try to model my game after Derek Jeter. I love the way he played in the field and his leadership. He’s my favorite player.”

Although athleticism is important, Shelburne said making sure he has good character is equally important to him, both on and off the field.

“I display good character on the field by leading the team, having a good attitude, and encouraging teammates,” he said. “I like to help them when they mess up, and help them get it right. Off the field, I show character by keeping up with my school work and helping out with school clubs.”

Shelburne said even though his Bearcats are in the post-season, that hasn’t stopped him from preparing for next year.

“I want to win districts again and make another run in the playoffs,” he said. “Individually, I just want to be a good leader and help lead my team to good winning season.”
