Altus teacher of the month: Gwen Davis – Presented by Jackson County Memorial Hospital

Some people know from an early age what career path they want to take in their life.

Others may take some time to try some things before deciding on exactly what they want to do. Gwen Davis was an accountant when she realized she was in the wrong profession.

“I earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in accounting from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. After working as an accountant, I realized I was the happiest teaching Sunday School and went back to school at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas where over time, I earned my teacher, principal, and superintendent certifications. I student taught and began my education career teaching ninth-grade English classes at what was then called Robert Lee Junior High in San Angelo, Texas.”

Davis is in her 28th year of public education. She is currently teaching high school Special Education classes at Altus High School. In the past, she has also taught high school English and Business classes and has been an administrator at the school district and state levels. Throughout her teaching career, Gwen has had a lot of kids come through her door. She says that there are so many things that she loves about her job.

“I love that I have the opportunity every day to make a difference in the life of a child or teenager,” she stated. “Students need positive role models, who will encourage and support them to be the best person they can be. They need to know you care and that it is okay to be different. I love teaching special education because I have time with my students to get to know them, build relationships with them and their families, and plan and teach integrated projects so they can make connections to their learning.”

Gwen says that there was someone in her life that was a positive influence on her teaching career.

“Mrs. Norma Green inspired me to become an educator,” she said. “She continually and very strongly encouraged me to go back to school and get my teaching certification. While in the teacher certification program at Angelo State University, she mentored me and I completed all of my volunteer and student teaching hours at that school. I was hired immediately after completing my certification.”
