Altus High School’s Avery Wilks – Softball Spotlight – Presented by Kerrick Hunter – Oklahoma Farm Bureau

Sports like softball and powerlifting build physical and mental strength. Avery Wilks, a sophomore at Altus High School says these sports have taught her that failure comes before success. “If you truly want something, you will work for it,” she said.

An important part of being on a team is picking each other up after mistakes. “We are constantly encouraging one another to keep the energy up! I’m passionate about my sport because I’ve played since I was a little girl and it’s become a part of my everyday life. It’s taught me valuable life lessons and I’ve made many friends!” said Avery.

Like many softball players, Avery started out on the T-ball field. After moving to Oklahoma she joined a travel team and then began playing school ball as soon as she was able. “My favorite part of representing Altus as an athlete is that I get to set a good example and show other schools what being a Bulldog means,” she said.

“My mom works her tail-end off for my brother and I,” says Avery, “but still manages to find time to come to our events, help us with our school work, and just be a great mom. I love her so much and I’m so thankful for her.”

Avery looks up to former OU softball player Grace Lyons-Turk. “What I truly love about her is her relationship with the Lord. She used her platform as a way to share the gospel and I really admire that,” says Avery.

“Just remember that you may be the only Bible someone reads,” is a quote Avery saw about a year ago that inspires her. “It is a reminder to show Jesus. My job as a follower of Christ is to be the hands and feet of Jesus!” she said.

Along with athletics Avery is busy with FFA. Her favorite teacher is ag instructor, Ms. Seehafer. “I spend a lot of time with her for ag competitions. She takes students under her wing and treats them as her kids,” said Avery.

Avery is also involved in trap shooting, animals science, quiz bowl, FCA, and NHS.
