BOYS
Coach: Kenny Bare
20-21 Record: 19-7
Over 20 years of experience at the head of the Velma-Alma boys basketball program have given coach Kenny Bare a pretty good idea of what he can expect from his teams. He said this year his boys are looking to build off their state semi-final run from last year. “Tyler Stewart (6-7, Sr.) should be one of the best big men in small school basketball this season,” he said. “Tristan Wainscott (6-2, Sr.) is another four-year starter who is coming back for us. We will develop some depth during the season and should be ready to make another deep run in the playoffs.” Wainscott averaged 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game while Stewart accounted for 13 points, 10 rebounds and shot 62 percent from the field. Crue Garrett (5-9, Jr.) is another player returning for the team, and who Bare said was most-improved last season and would have a big role this season. Jackson Henson (6-1, Sr.), Joseph Davis (5-9, Jr.), Cameron Wiggins (6-3, Jr.), Stetson Page (6-7, Jr.), and Mikey Griffith (6-3, Fr.) round out the roster for coach Bare. Griffith is a very athletic player and according to coach Bare, he should develop into a “diaper dandy!”
GIRLS
Coach: Stefan Hunt
20-21 Record: 19-5
Head coach Stefan Hunt said his Lady Comets have a roster full of young talent, as well as returning five of the top seven players from their area consolation finals team last season. “We’re looking to extend the success we’ve had the last several years,” he said. “The Lady Comets will be led by a four-year starting senior, Shain Ille (5-10, Sr.) at forward with additional contributions coming from Kennedy McGuire, and Rylee McLain. Addy Smith is another player to watch for the Lady Comets. Smith is an aggressive player with an unwavering determination that her competitors experience firsthand. Ally Smith is another player coach Hunt said brings great leadership to the court for Velma-Alma. Smith is a gifted student-athlete and represents her school and community well.
