Hollis’ Cooper Cummins – Athlete Spotlight Presented by Cattlemens Bank

Athletes can have different issues throughout their careers. Whether they have a slump in their production, an injury, or something else that causes them problems, they have to work to overcome it and move past it. That is exactly what Cooper Cummins did and it led to his favorite moment of his career.

“I think the biggest highlight of my career happened last year,” he said. “After I came off of knee surgery, in my first game back I hit two home runs in the regional playoffs. It felt good to get back out there with my teammates and it was awesome to have a game like that my first game back.”

Cooper is a senior at Hollis High School. He is a dual-sport athlete for the Tigers playing baseball and basketball. Cummins first started playing baseball when he was about three years old. He currently plays shortstop, catcher, and pitcher and says that he enjoys the game as much now as he did when he first started playing.

Becoming the player that he is today has required a lot of time and dedication, but Cooper knows that the work will be worth it.

“I have put in many hours of batting practice or taking ground balls,” he said. “Sometimes it requires missing out hanging with friends to go to the cage or the field, but if you want to be the best that you can, you have to be willing to make sacrifices.”

Throughout his life and career, Cooper has had a number of people that have had an impact on his life. Out of all of them, he says that there are a few that had a bigger influence.

“The biggest role models in my life would have to be my parents,” he said. “They have always made sure to teach me right from wrong and have made many sacrifices so I could have the best opportunities. Two of my teachers, Mrs. Mefford and Mrs. Williams, have also had an impact on my life. They have taught me how to push myself in academics so that I can be successful in athletics and academics.”
