Athletes have to always be prepared to play. Even if they are not in the starting lineup, something could happen that would thrust them into the game immediately. That is exactly what happened to Jordan Johnson.
“I was playing in a showcase tournament this past June,” she said. “Our pitcher got overheated on the second day and could not continue playing. In the heat, I pitched five games back to back to make it into the championship game. It was tough but I’m glad I was able to step up and help my team.”
A junior at Elgin High School, Jordan plays both fastpitch and slowpitch for the Lady Owls. She switches between pitcher, third base, and shortstop. She had her first taste of softball when she was eight years old and joined a ten and under softball team. She has made a lot of progress from her early days of playing softball and says it takes a lot of work to get there.
“It takes time and dedication,” she said. “But it also is important to have a positive mindset and mental toughness. All of that has helped me get to where I am today.”
Elgin head softball coach, Levi Garrett says that Jordan will be a key player this season.
“Jordan will play a big role for us this season,” he said. “She will anchor the circle and hit in the middle of the order. I expect her to have a solid season.”
Johnson has always been surrounded by great people that have influenced her life. But she says that there are a couple of people that she has looked up to.
“My family is full of athletes and competitors,” she said. “But my biggest role models are my older brothers. They showed me how to be a leader on and off the field.”
Jordan serves as treasurer of the Multicultural Club at Elgin. She is also a member of a travel softball team, Oklahoma Epic 2023 National Smith/Cronic.
