Elk City’s Macy McSparrin – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Great Plain Bank

Macy McSparrin is a base for the Elk City cheer squad, and she said she started cheering at five years old and hasn’t looked back since.
“I love being a cheerleader because I love representing my school,” McSparrin said. “I also love it because it lets me be a fan in a more involved way. I love cheering on our different sports in many different ways. The cheer season is going great this year, and a personal goal of mine is to have better school spirit because we’ve lacked that the last couple of years.

“Our student section is so supportive,” she added. “They have high energy the entire game. Our band is excellent and the cheer team is amazing as well. I believe all of those factors will have a positive impact on our sports teams’ confidence levels and impact how they play.”
McSparrin said the importance of her role as a senior is twofold, and has many far-reaching implications beyond the fields and courts she cheers on.
“I want people to always feel like I’m an easy person to talk to and that I am kind,” she said. “Your character says a lot about you. I display good character on both the field and court by being a leader of my team. I always tell my cheer girls to go home and practice, or to smile, or even if they’re having a rough time i make sure to give them words of encouragement. I always want my girls to know I’m going to be cheering them on no matter what.
“I like being in the role that people look up to me,” she continued. “I feel like even when I wasn’t a senior a lot of girls were looking up to me. Some of my girls even call me ‘Momma Mace’ because I always have what they need or I give them advice. A few things I’m doing to help my girls out is mainly words of encouragement, encouraging them to be better, and just having fun with everything.”
