Elk City senior Nathan Womack admits he was disappointed with his performance at his last high school golf tournament.
While the Elks cruised to a fourth-place finish at the 4A boys state golf tournament earlier this month at Prairie West Golf Course in Weatherford, Womack placed eighth individually shooting a 225 over three rounds.
“I’m really happy with how our team performed,” Womack says. “With me not playing how I had hoped this season, something I’ve had to continually remind myself is that how I perform on the course doesn’t reflect who I am, and that I’m not always going to play my best golf.”
Regardless, a worse-than-expected end to his varsity athletic career left a bad taste in his mouth.
“I think these mediocre performances really help to give me that motivation to work hard and get better,” Womack said. “Sometimes, when all is feeling good, it’s easy to get lazy with practice and not put in the work that needs to be done.”
Womack, a University of Central Missouri commit, plans to spend the shortened offseason before his debut fall season sticking to his routine.
“In golf, just like in most every sport, there isn’t a shortcut to success,” Womack said. “You’ve got to work for it.”
Womack chose UCM over others, in part for the tremendous competition within the Division II Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. He plans to pursue a degree in finance and plans to become an advisor.
“When I went on a visit to UCM, the facilities were the best I had come across,” Womack said, and the team has had lots of success in the past.”
