Elk City Football Spotlight – Cooper Patton – Presented by Great Plains Bank

Last season, as a junior, Cooper Patton had 88 tackles and four interceptions when lined up in the defensive secondary. This year the senior safety is having another great campaign as the Elk City Elks are rolling through the football season. For Patton football is a team-first sport and without everyone collectively being on the same page a team cannot meet their goals. As an individual Patton tries to bring leadership and a positive mindset to the team while providing a veteran presence.

“I try to bring positivity into any football event,” Patton said. “Encouragement goes a long way so I like to make friends with everyone and always be there for them. Being positive and helping get everyone hyped up is also a big part in the walkthroughs and talks before a big game.”

So far things are clicking for Elk City and Patton agrees as the Elks ramp up their season and continue progressing through district play.

“I think the season is going good! We do still have areas we need to strengthen and improve on,” Patton said. “But my expectation for the season is for everyone to continue to improve as much as they can individually and to do our best as a team everyday.”

Football has been a way of life for Patton and he’s enjoying his senior year as much as possible. Patton first began playing the sport with friends and then joined his first tackle football team in the third grade.

“Over the years my favorite thing about football and being on the team is the friendships I make and the life skills the game has given me,” Patton said.

Patton appreciates everything the game has provided for him but he is even more appreciative of his family and community’s support.

“The person that inspires me the most is my dad,” Patton said. “He has taught me that working hard is key to any type of success.”

After graduating from high school Patton plans to continue his education at Southwest Oklahoma State University and pursue a degree in Exercise Science.
