Elk City Basketball Spotlight – Cole Buie – Presented by First National Bank & Trust

Cole Buie is a sophomore at Elk City and plays point guard for the Elks basketball team. Buie started his basketball career at the age of six and his love for the game has grown over the years. While he loves competing on the court, Buie also appreciates the camaraderie that the sport provides.

“My favorite thing about playing the game and being on a team is the bonding I get to have with my teammates,” Buie said. “I love the tight connection we have and it’s a joy to be around everyone all the time.”

Last season was the starting point guard for the Elks – a difficult task for a freshman – but Buie impressed coaches and they said he became more comfortable with his role throughout the season. Buie has been working hard in the offseason to expand his game and after gaining a year of experience is looking forward to a big sophomore season.

“Starting as a freshman was quite a jump from junior high,” Buie said. “But with the help of my older teammates and coaches they helped me adapt and fit right in. During the offseason playing summer basketball I really worked to get better at the point guard position as a whole, handle the ball, get to the rim, create shots for my teammates, and work on my defense.”

One piece of advice that Buie often thinks about to keep himself motivated came from one of his coaches who said to not lose confidence and just keep playing. Buie is ready for the season to get underway and is most looking forward to a matchup against Weatherford.

“I play on a summer team with a few players from there and it’s always fun to be playing against them,” Buie said.

In the classroom Buie also gives his undivided attention. His favorite subject is Spanish because he said he enjoys learning a new language. Outside of academics and athletics Buie is also very involved in school clubs and programs including FFA, FCA, and NHS.
