Cordell Boys & Girls Golf – Team Spotlight – Presented by Mike’s Meat Market

By Chance Burk

Although golf is an individual sport, every piece of the team has to work together in order to succeed. The Cordell High School golf team, led by head coach Josh Trent, was able to come together and create a successful season for themselves.

Trent entered the second year of his golf coaching career this season. The team had some success last year but stepped it up this season. JD Maddox, one of the three seniors on the boys team had high praise for the overall team chemistry.

“It was awesome, the whole team was a friend group,” Maddox said. Trent also received praise from his players. Cooper Campbell, another one of the senior boys, said “Trent is a great coach, he’s helped me a lot.”

Great leadership and great chemistry are vital parts that make a successful team. Another vital part is hard work and putting that hard work to use in events. Coach Trent had high praise and high expectations for two of his athletes coming into this season. The first is Kaitlyn Babek. She is a junior and qualified for regionals this year and state last year. Coach Trent believes that she will continue to progress and have an even more successful senior season next year. The second is Thomas Reimer. He is a senior and also qualified for regionals this year.

“It meant so much to me,” said Thomas about his senior season.

After a successful season, it is common to have a few not-so-successful years. However, Coach Trent and the rest of the Cordell Golf Team, plan to continue the success. It will be a tough road for the boys after losing three athletes to graduation, but Coach Trent has hope that they will add new additions to the team and continue the success. The girls will have everyone back and will also add talent from some incoming freshmen.

Throughout the season, there were multiple high points for the team. One of the highlights of the season would be the boy’s performance in the Hobart tournament. Thomas Reimer and JD Maddox both placed in the top five and the team finished in second place. Some of the other highlights would be Birdie Brown qualifying for state as a freshman and Kaitlyn Babek breaking her personal best twice this year.

The Cordell High School golf team turned in an improbable season into a successful season they will never forget. The hard work and dedication each member of the team showed this season not only paid off this season but will pay off in the future.
