Clinton’s Kat Meacham: Among the Nation’s Best Throwers – Presented by Pond Agency

Clinton High School junior Kat Meacham won the VYPE Weatherford-area spring sports poll. Meacham said being a student-athlete at Clinton is like no other Oklahoma school thanks to the coaches and faculty.

“The encouragement of administration to be a champion, not only on the field, but also in the classroom is what I love the most,” Meacham said. “At the middle school we celebrated academic success with a ‘champions’ party. At the high school we have the opportunity to customize our classes to prepare us for the next phase of our life. The administration has created the attitude of #BuildingChampions. We have a saying, ‘It’s a great day to be a Red Tornado.’ We use that slogan for all successes… academic, athletic, music, [FFA] or club activities,” said Meacham.

Besides track and field, Meacham plays softball, golf and is a member of National Honor Society and Key Club. Her favorite subject in school is math.

“My favorite subject is math with Coach Higbee. He has a way of coaching the best out of every student in class,” Meacham said.

As a member of the track team, Meacham has set some high marks in multiple events. She threw a personal best 164-foot-1-inch discus heave in Ramona. She was one of only six high school throwers to eclipse the 160-foot mark in the nation this spring, and it was the second-best throw among all high school juniors in the country. Meacham set her personal best in the shot put at 39 feet, 8 inches at the OBU Invitational this season.

After graduating, Meacham plans to attend college and major in accounting. She is hopeful she will get the opportunity to compete in discus, hammer throw and shot in college.

“I love my team’s work ethic. Every day we push each other to be the best we can be. When someone has a bad day, we pick each other up. If the bad day turns into a bad week, we break out a ‘slump cake.’ Following the slump cake, their next performances are record setting,” Meacham said. “It’s a family, I’ve known my teammates for five years now and we are always there for each other. The little things I know about my teammates and what they do when they throw and how to encourage each other to do our best, even on tough days.”
