Kara McPherson is a student-athlete at Western Oklahoma State College. She plays forward as a member of the Lady Pioneers basketball team. Basketball has been a part of her life for quite some time, but she says that when she was in high school is when she started to get serious about it.
“I started playing basketball when I was in the fifth grade,” Kara recalled. “Once I hit my sophomore year at Snyder High School, I really started to enjoy it and knew that I wanted to play in college.”
Once she decided that she wanted to play at the next level, then came the decision of where she wanted to play and it turns out that WOSC was a perfect fit.
“I really have enjoyed my time at WOSC,” she said. “It is close to home and it was a good transition from a small-town school into college. I like to make memories with my team and compete alongside them. We have fun and it is great to get support from the school.”
The Lady Pioneers’ head coach, Jared Black, says that McPherson is a solid athlete and teammate, but also an equally outstanding person off the court.
“After coaching Kara last year, I have developed a deep respect for her as a person,” coach Black said. “It is important to me that players in our program are academically sound as well as good citizens. Kara is a leader who takes responsibility for her grades and represents WOSC well.
She has dedicated this summer to improve her game and has worked tirelessly to improve. Kara is a model student-athlete who goes above and beyond expectations. I would encourage any athlete who wants to play collegiate athletics to model their behavior around people like Kara. I am very confident that she will help our team this year both on and off the floor. I will be extremely sad to see her leave us next May, but I know she has the tools to succeed in life.”
McPherson is pursuing a Biology degree at WOSC. Once her time at Western is over, she plans to attend a university and get a BS in Forensic Science-Molecular Biology.
