VYPE: What has golf taught you that you use in your daily life?
Avery: Golf is mainly a mental sport, and it has taught me how to brush off the tough things and keep my mind on what’s ahead.
VYPE: What is your favorite part about being on the Eisenhower golf team?
Avery: We don’t have very many players. I truly value my small team and love making memories with them. It’s also nice having someone to lean on when I need help.
VYPE: Why are you passionate about golf?
Avery: I’m passionate about my sport because it’s not a common sport. Also, most of my family plays golf so I kind of feel like I have a legacy to uphold.
VYPE: What has been your favorite memory playing golf for Eisenhower?
Avery: My favorite memory is probably when we were at a tournament in Duncan and one of my teammates forgot to put the brake on her cart so her whole bag fell into a pond that was next to us.
VYPE: Who was your favorite teacher from any grade and why?
Avery: My favorite teacher was my pre-K teacher, Mrs. Wallace. I had an amazing relationship with her, and she was always there for me even as a bossy little pre-K’er. The kids in class always called me Little Wallace.
VYPE: Who inspires you and why?
Avery: My papa Crow probably inspires me the most. Unfortunately, we lost him a couple years ago but I know he’s looking down watching me. He always wanted me to do my best and I just hope I’m making him proud.
VYPE: What is the best that anyone has given you?
Avery: The best advice I ever heard/was given was when Jon Rahm quoted Ted Lasso after winning the Masters by saying “be a goldfish.” Goldfish are the happiest animals in the world because they only have a ten second memory. I try to remember this after every bad swing, think like a goldfish. Just forget that shot and move on to the next.
VYPE: Are you involved in any other activities?
Avery: I am heavily involved in school with the Student Council and Key Club. I also volunteer at my church a lot.
VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.
Avery: I want to thank my parents and grandparents for pushing me to always better myself in my sport. I also want to thank my whole family for supporting me. I want to thank my team and coach for always pushing me and being there to celebrate and comfort me. Most importantly, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me the opportunity to worship him and be an example of him in my sport.
