OFFENSE
Coming off a 6-4 season, head coach Grant Potter has set expectations high for his team this season. “We are very exciting about the upcoming season. Our kids have worked really hard in the weight room, and we are very pleased with the results. We have a great group of kids who have really bought in to what we are trying to accomplish this season so we hope that it carries over into a successful 2022 season,” said coach Potter. With eight starters back on offense the Comets are poised for a strong season offensively. Jake Wright (5-10, 190, Jr.) returns at running back after carrying the ball 210 times for 1,006 yards and 14 TDs. Quarterbacking the Comets is Levi Taylor (5-10, 175, Sr.). Taylor rushed for 826 yards on 197 carries and scored 12 TDs. He can throw when needed, but his game is on the ground, mainly because of the strong offensive line and his ability to run the ball effectively. Ryan Lytal (5-8, 190, Sr.) and Emilio Gonzalez (6-0, 200, Sr.) are both four- year starters up front. Grayden Deviney (5-9, 180, So.) started as a freshman and returns to his fullback position. Braydon Strong (6-1, 160, Sr.) has the best hands on the team and will start at receiver. Also look for Jacob Bonnewell (So.) who has developed into a starter on the offensive line.
DEFENSE
Wright will play his normal linebacker spot where he accounted for 114 tackles, seven for loss with two fumble recoveries. The two outside linebackers are Hunter Helms (6-1, 180, Jr.) and Jack Brookshire (5-9, 165, Sr.). Last season Helms grabbed 45 tackles and one interception while Brookshire managed 57 tackles and an interception of his own. The trio will be one of the best in the class. Thomas Strawther (6-4, 275, Sr.) is tough to contend with on the line for any offensive lineman. Strawther made 38 tackles and five sacks as a junior. The secondary features Taylor at free safety and Roderick Sowers (6-1, 160, Jr.) at corner. Taylor was big last year with 31 tackles and five interceptions, while Sow- ers accounted for 37 tackles and two picks. “We like to play physical and aggressive up front on defense. We want teams to have to fight for any room in the run game and protect against the big plays in the passing game,” said coach Potter. The coaching staff consists of John Wofford, Jim Gather and John McCray.
