Cameron University Spotlight: Harrah’s Katie King – Presented by Cameron University

When Cameron University basketball player Katie King graduated from Harrah High School in 2020, she knew there was one place she wanted to continue her education.

“From the first time I went on a visit at Cameron, it felt like home. I really got along with the coaches, and it helped that my former high school coach, Coach (Jeff) Mahoney, was on the staff and I knew I could trust him,” King said. “CU was also not too far from home, so I loved that aspect.”

King, a business administration major with a concentration in finance, was well-prepared to make the academic leap into college.

“The biggest adjustment aside from athletics was time management,” King said. “Your classes and your work is done on your own time, at your own pace so it’s important that you manage your time well for yourself.”

But adjusting to college basketball was a task King admitted took some time.

“The pace of the game was by far the biggest adjustment athletically,” King said.

Having great teammates helped King to make that leap as an underclassman.

“I enjoy the memories we make outside the basketball court the most. The past three years, we have had great times together,” King said. “Whether that’s just board games in the apartments or going to movies together, it’s always a fun time and I enjoy being around my teammates.”

To high school students interested in attending Cameron, King offered this advice:

“I’ve enjoyed the people that I’ve met and created relationships with here at Cameron. My advice would be to take as many concurrent classes as you can while you’re in high school. Those help knock out some Gen-Ed hours that count towards your degree. I also would suggest making the most out of your four years of college. There won’t be many other times like this in your life so make the most memories you can make.”
