9 Questions with Mason Waite
VYPE: What grade are you in this year and what position do you play?
Waite: I am a freshman, working hard for varsity playtime as a center defensive midfield. I am also a member of a Club team out of South Lakes.
VYPE: How long have you played soccer?
Waite: I have played soccer for 11 years. My mom signed me up at the age of four, coaching me for several years. Once I scored my first goal, I fell in love with the sport and have played soccer ever since.
VYPE: What aspect of your game have you improved the most coming into the new season?
Waite: I have worked hard to improve my passing. This is my first year with the high school team and developing chemistry with all the players will take time.
VYPE: What do you enjoy most about the team and your teammates?
Waite: My teammates push me hard at practice and are like family to me. We spend 10 plus hours a week on the field together and many of us are close friends and hangout outside of school.
VYPE: Do you belong to any clubs or groups at school?
Waite: I am the representative for the ninth grade student council.
VYPE: What do you think you would like to do after you graduate?
Waite: I would like to play soccer at the collegiate level while pursuing a degree. I haven’t decided on what area of study, but I know I want to play soccer at the next level.
VYPE: What will it be like for you to play on the same team as your brother?
Waite: My brother and I have lots of memories of playing together since we were young. I have always pushed myself to compete at his age level and this year is no different. It’s bittersweet to team up with him again this season as this will likely be the last time we are on the pitch together.
VYPE: Do you have a favorite subject or teacher in school?
Waite: Coach McDonald is my favorite teacher, and my favorite subject is math. Coach McDonald always goes above and beyond to make himself available to assist any student.
VYPE: Is there a game on the schedule you are looking forward to playing?
Waite: I look forward to playing MacArthur. Last year the game was intense and the whole time I wished I was on the pitch playing. It was a close game and I want to help Elgin win this year.
