Elgin High School’s Audrey Cannon is in her second year of FFA, and the freshman is loving every minute. Cannon joined FFA in the eighth grade thanks to some encouragement from her parents.
“My parents encouraged me to join. They grew up as FFA kids and wanted me to grow up involved in my area’s agricultural,” said Cannon.
Having the opportunity to meet new people is one reason Cannon said she loves being a member of the chapter.
“I enjoy meeting wonderful people with all different levels of experience in different areas so we can all come together and help one another. I’m involved in animal science, financial literacy, and gardening,” said Cannon.
Currently Cannon is not showing livestock, but she plans to in the future.
The freshman decided to step away from cheerleading for the spring semester to focus on the family ranch, and schoolwork, but she does plan to rejoin the team next year.
“With our family starting a horse ranch where we breed quarter horses, and my participation in our local rodeo club, I found myself being spread too thin and struggled with feeling like I had the time to properly meet all my expectations with my schoolwork. I was under a lot of pressure and decided to take a break from cheerleading for the spring semester so that I could reset and prioritize my commitments, but I do plan on participating with the squad again in the future, but for the meantime I have enjoyed being in weightlifting to stay fit but without the after school time commitments,” said Cannon.
Cannon said she loves FFA and cheer and plans to do both for Elgin High School.
“Cheer has always been my only sport. My favorite part about being on a squad is the connection you can build with people. Between the locker room and out on the mat, you build a personal connection and professional one. You must have trust them to have your back literally and metaphorically,” said Cannon.
