Elgin Owls 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Arvest Bank Elgin

ELGIN OWLS

Coach: CHALMER WYATT

8-3

OFFENSE

One of eight returning starters, quarterback Tres Lorah (6-0, 200, Jr.) will return to command the Owls’ offense after he accounted for 1,200 passing yards and delivered 10 touchdowns as a sophomore. Chalmer Wyatt’s explosive offense will count on the backfield one-two punch of Matt Lund (5-11, 165, Sr.) and Ritson Meyer (6-0, 200, So.) out of an 11-personnel pistol utilizing inside zone, outside zone and counter schemes. Lund turned in a whopping 17 touchdowns on over 1,400 yards last season while Meyer added nine trips to the end zone on just under 1,000 yards. The Owls will take advantage of intermediate air gains out of play action. Lorah’s arm will often connect with fellow senior Michael Adesola (5-11, 165), whom he tagged for 27 catches, 500 yards and seven touchdowns a year ago. Guard Keith Ferguson (6-3, 300, Sr.) and tackle Jace Williams (6-3, 290, Jr.) will pair to protect Lorah’s blind side.

DEFENSE

Elgin’s defense returns nine starters from its eight-win campaign a year ago. Its goal will be to defeat blocks and hold “everyone responsible for the tackle,” Wyatt said. Mike-backer Colyn Donnelly (6-1, 210, Jr.) headlines a talented returning crew. He made 141 total tackles, including five for losses, caught an interception and recorded a sack last year. Peyton Christensen (5-10, 170 Sr.) will play rover after he sacked opposing quarterbacks six times last year, caught a pick and recorded 87 tackles, seven for loss; and the aforementioned Meyer will anchor the weak side after a 115-tackle, four-sack freshman campaign. Williams, whom Wyatt said, “has the ability to control the game in the trenches” with his “bully mentality,” returns to the defense after recording 73 tackles, five tackles for loss and five sacks last year. Defensive end Jack Anglley (6-3, 180, Sr.) will be by Williams’ side pressuring opposing backs after he turned in nine sacks and 13 tackles-for-loss last year. Free safety Brody Morrison (6-0, 170, So.) captured a pair of interceptions and recorded 90 tackles as a freshman.
