Making the transition from high school to college can be challenging for some students who are experiencing the task of time management for the first time in their lives. Taking personal responsibility to complete your assignments while making practice, working out, and attempting to have a social life, can be overwhelming.

For Annie Sikes, a freshman at Cameron University, becoming more independent was the biggest challenge going from Velma-Alma High School to college.

“Being on my own was definitely a big adjustment for me. It has taught me to be more independent,” said Sikes.

Many freshmen are unsure of their path when they enter college and deciding on a major is one of the first big decisions they will make. For Sikes, knowing what path she wanted to take in college made that decision an easy one.

“My major is sports and exercise science. I also run track; I’m a hurdler,” said Sikes.

Adding athletics brings another level of responsibility the student must prepare for. Sikes said being part of the track team has been a great experience.

“They’re always encouraging throughout hard practices and pushing you to do your best. Aubrey Berry definitely inspiresme to be a better athlete. Running track here has brought me some of my closest friendships,” said Sikes.

Sikes said there are several reasons why Cameron University was the right school for her. From the courses and athletics to its proximity to home, Sikes said there are a lot of things that surprised her once she got on campus.

“The amount of resources available to you surprised me. Coming to a smaller college you can build better relationships with each professor and get the help that you need,” said Sikes.

Her advice to the next class of incoming freshmen is simple. “Keep up with your work! You’ll have a lot more free time if you keep up with your work,” said Sikes.
