A member of DECA and the Student Advisory Council, Kenzie Andrews is a senior at
Duncan High School where she’s a member of the varsity pom squad as well.
When you’re a member of the pom squad, you spend a lot of time in practice, getting your
routines perfect. For Andrews, it’s one thing she enjoys most about being on the team.
“My favorite part of being on pom is the bonds I have made with my teammates. We spend
so much time together every day and we have all become so close because of pom,” said
Andrews.

Andrews said dance was not the first sport or activity she tried as a kid. In fact, her mother
placed her in several different sports to see what she would enjoy the most.
“Growing up my mom made me try almost every sport before I started dancing. I did T-ball,
basketball, softball, gymnastics, and all-star cheer before finally ending up dancing at
Heartbeat when I was in second grade. My love and passion for dance is what made me
want to try out for the pom squad and I have loved it since,” said Andrews.
As a student-athlete at DHS, Andrews said the faculty and staff make it a great place to be a
student first.
“Being a student-athlete can always be a challenge but the teachers and staff at Duncan are
so supportive of all of the athletes which makes it so much fun. My favorite subject in high
school has been chemistry. Although I have lots of great teachers, Mrs. Curry, Mrs. Skinner,
and Mrs. Hennan have stuck out as some of my favorites throughout high school,” said
Andrews.
This season, Andrews said her favorite moments have come when the entire squad is
getting ready for away games.
“It’s always so fun to be all together in the same place getting ready to cheer on our
Demons,” said Andrews.
Andrews said she’s proud of the squad and several teammates have really impressed her
this season.
“I am always so proud of our whole squad, but this season I have loved having Julia Wilson
as a strong leader of our team. I have also been impressed by our freshmen, Merrick Ivey,
and Madison Vonfeldt, for their hard work and fun personalities,” said Andrews.
Next fall, Andrews plans on attending the University of Oklahoma and major in
Biochemistry Pre-Med. As for the Class of 2024?
“I hope my class is remembered for our respect and school spirit. Being a member of a
spirit squad, I love seeing lots of people in my grade show up to every event,” said Andrews.
