Duncan’s Kaydee Wright Coach Spotlight Presented by OECU

Kaydee Wright is in her third year of coaching at Velma-Alma High School. Her decision to become a coach was impacted by her experiences as a student.

“I knew that I wanted to become a coach when I was in high school,” she said. “I always loved helping the younger grades at camps and practices so I decided that was the career path I would choose in college.”

Wright currently is the head coach for the junior high and high school softball teams, as well as the junior high girls golf team and the middle school girls basketball. She also serves as an assistant coach for the high school girls basketball team.

There have been a couple of people that have had an impact on Wright’s life in regards to the career she has chosen.

“Coach Howard Moore from Bristow was my elementary P.E. teacher,” she recalled. “He ran the best elementary P.E. program that I have been a part of or witnessed to this day. Along with him, Dr. Linda McElroy, a college professor and advisor from Oklahoma Baptist University, had a great influence on me. She inspired me to be the teacher and coach that I am today. I am striving to utilize the knowledge Dr. Mac instilled in me mixed with the fun atmosphere coach Moore always created, for both P.E. and practices.”

Though she enjoys all the aspects of being a coach, Wright says that there are moments that she really enjoys.

“Focusing on the ‘little things’ is a big part of my coaching philosophy,” she stated. “I would say there have been many highlights in the sense of little things.  We worked on executing our first and third cutoff play in practice and the next game we threw the runner out at home off of it. That is a highlight for me. When it clicks and everything goes how we have practiced it, I consider that a highlight. Many small victories along the way.”
