Hinton Comets 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Eagle Realty – The Morley Group

HINTON COMETS

Coach: GRANT POTTER

6-4

OFFENSE

Turnover is one constant high school football coaches face every season. The Hinton Comets and head coach Grant Potter are facing the challenge of dealing with turnover in some key positions. “2023 will look different in Hinton. Graduated eight starters on both sides of the ball most of which were 3-to-4 year starters. We have a good group of kids coming that work really hard and have great chemistry, so we are confident they step up and get the job done. We are looking forward to seeing some new faces get opportunities to show what they can do,” said coach Potter. One player coming back is running back Jake Wright (5-10, 195, Sr.) who rushed for 533 yards and four touchdowns despite missing several games last year. Wright has help in the backfield with Trevor Rodman (5-8, 170, Sr.) returning. Rodman accounted for 710 all-purpose yards and 11 touchdowns. Rodman is a player who can score in multiple ways. Grayden Deviney (5-9, 185, Jr.) is a new starter at quarterback. “We believe in being physical on offense and establishing the run game. We have a few running backs that will carry the load and we like to utilize our QB in the run game as well. When we throw looking for our TE Clifton Craighead, H-Back Krece

Douglass, and WRs Zander Furrow and Colten Helms to make plays for us,” said Potter. Tegan White (5-9, 225, Jr.) and Jacob Bonnewell (5-10, 175, Jr.) are two offensive linemen who bring stability and solid technique to the trenches.

DEFENSE

“Our philosophy is to let our kids plays as fast as they can and try to be the most physical team we can be. We want to stop the run with an aggressive front seven and try to disrupt the passing game with pressure,” said Potter. Jake Wright, a VYPE Top 100 nominee, will start at linebacker where he made 113 tackles, five sacks and one interception a year ago. Wright will lead the 4-3 defense with Clifton Craighead (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Rodman playing safety. Craighead made 81 tackles as a junior with two interceptions while Rodman notched 42 tackles and three picks of his own. Zander Furrow and Tegan White could find significant playing time on defense as well. Assistant coaches include John Wofford, Jim Gather, and Brian Miller.
