Now a senior at Chickasha High School, Nevaeh Smelley is not only part of the varsity cheer team, she’s also a member of the yearbook staff.

“Being a student-athlete at Chickasha High school gives you so many benefits and gives you the perfect opportunity to put yourself out there. It’s a really great experience and is always fun. I’m apart of yearbook and getting to know everyone throughout the school pretty well,” said Smelley.

The senior played volleyball growing up, but later tried cheer and decided to stick with it.

“As I was growing up, I played volleyball and loved it, when I came to Chickasha is when I knew I wanted to try cheer to put myself out there more. Everyone got to know me so quickly,” said Smelley. “One thing I’ve enjoyed the most while being on this team is getting to watch everyone grow into who they are over time. I’m a senior and getting to be someone that another may look up to is important to me.”

Always a student first, Smelley said she enjoyed her classes and teachers at school.

“I absolutely love Mrs. Butler the counselor at Chickasha. There was never a moment where I thought I couldn’t count on her. She has really helped me plan out my future and get a good head start,” said Smelley.

There have been many memorable moments for Smelley and her teammates.

“A favorite memory I’ve has so far throughout this year would probably be prom. My first ever prom was brought to life through Chickasha, I’m so glad I got to be involved and experience the feeling of going to prom and doing all the things around it.”

Once high school comes to an end, the senior is taking her talents to the next level.

“I would like to become a dental hygienist, by starting at USAO. Going through their pre dentistry program for four years and then seeking a job in dentistry afterwards, while then going through a dental hygienist program for two years to then become a dental hygienist,” said Smelley.

As for the Class of 2024?

“I would like my class to be remembered for all the effort that was put in this year. As seniors it’s our responsibility and the school askes a lot from us, I’m glad we have some seniors that are willing to put in the extra work,” said Smelley.
