Hollis’ Landry Whorton – FFA Spotlight – Presented by OK Ag Credit

It would be easier to list activities Hollis High School’s Landry Whorton is not part of at school. The junior will start her senior year at Hollis HS next Fall, and she will continue to participate in FFA.

“I first got involved in the FFA my eighth-grade year. My parents are the ones who encouraged me to join. What I enjoy most is getting to go to the elementary and talk to them about agriculture and FFA. It’s always so much talking to them. Some of the things we do with them is read books and paint pumpkins,” said Whorton.

This year Whorton was involved in public speaking, quiz bowl, and community service activities in FFA while serving on the yearbook staff, Art Club, National Honor Society, Oklahoma Honor Society, Junior Aeolians, FFA and athletics.

Whorton also participates in cross country for the Tigers.

“What I love about the cross-country program is that we’re a team. We’re together from sunup to sundown every day working together. We all push each other to be our best and whenever one of us falls we’re there to pick them up. Most of us have been in this program together since the sixth grade. I will forever cherish those long mornings of practice and the bus rides home after a meet. I also participate in track. Track is probably my favorite sport. While some days it can be absolutely miserable sitting out in Oklahoma weather, which can be 80 degrees one minute and then 20 the next, I have met some of my closest friends there and have had some of the greatest experiences as well,” said Whorton.

Her teammates are a big reason she loves being part of the team.

“What I love most about my teammates is that they’re always there for me. This previous year I suffered a serious injury during track season that also affected my cross-country season. I had hoped it wouldn’t but due to my injury I kept falling and tearing the ligaments in my ankle more, I tore a ligament in my ankle during track. They were always there to pick me up though and make sure I was ok. I felt like I was letting them down though. They however assured me that I wasn’t letting them down that I needed to take care of myself and get better. So, I went on and had surgery and did not compete in cross country last year. So overall what I love most about my teammates is that we’re always there for each other,” said Whorton.

Whorton is making plans for college once she is done with high school in 2024.

“My plans for after are to attend Oklahoma State University, however I have not declared my major, but I am interested in possibly going into event planning,” said Whorton.
