When Hollis head coach Derick Hodges started the new season, he was aware several sophomores would need to step up if the team was going to be competitive. Sophomore Tori Whisenant was one of those sophomores who did just that. Hitting in the two-hole and playing first base are no easy tasks, but Whisenant handled the pressure and helped her team to a 26-8 record this season.
“My favorite thing about my softball team is my teammates. We won together, we lost together, but most importantly we grew together and had a lot of fun doing it. My favorite memory this year was winning districts with a great team and great coaches,” said Whisenant.
The sophomore said it was a true team effort and while every class had players step up, there were others who deserve to be recognized as well.
“I am very proud of our two freshmen that have stepped up this year, Josie Robinson at shortstop, and Karlee McFerrin at catcher. Sophomore Jaycee McFerrin is an amazing pitcher. Junior Presley Riley made a great hand at third. Senior Morgan Robinson always had our back in the outfield,” said Whisenant. “We were a very small close group, always got along well and had each other’s backs.”
Whisenant admits she is very competitive and loves doing anything where she can compete, which is just one reason she loves being a student-athlete at HHS.
“Hollis High School is a great place for student-athletes because the support from the students, fans, and community is unreal. Our community goes out of its way to feed us, take care of us, and make us feel special. I have always enjoyed playing any sport that is competitive, because I love to compete,” said Whisenant.
Whisenant is involved in Junior Aeolians, and she is interested in working in the medical field after high school and college.
“I am especially interested in the chiropractic field because I have witnessed the benefits of it,” said Whisenant.
