High school athletics is just as much about the parents as it is about the students.
While the student signs up and plays the games, the parents are making sure all of the gear is purchased, the kids are where they need to be when they need to be there, and a lot of other things like that.
Sherry Willey is the mother of two. One is a former high school athlete, while the other is a current high school athlete. She says that being a part of their journey that she would not trade for anything.
“I have loved being involved with my kid’s athletics,” she said. “I think it is super important to support them. They may not always show it but I know they like looking up in the stands and feeling supported, and most importantly supporting them win or lose. Teaching your children how to deal with defeat is an important part of life and builds character to last a lifetime.”
Sherry is a graduate of Altus High School and her kids have followed in her footsteps.
“My daughter is currently at student at the University of Oklahoma Dental Hygiene School. When she was at Altus, she cheered and played tennis. My son is a junior at Altus and plays basketball. He also enjoys track and golf. Both of them have been involved in sports all of their lives.”
Supporting and cheering on her kids and their teammates is something that Willey has enjoyed doing for as long as they have played sports.
“I have enjoyed supporting my kid’s fundraising activities as well,” she said.
“With a little work, you will find other people love supporting them as well.
We are blessed with living in a community that supports our athletes. I have enjoyed getting
to know our new basketball coach. He is teaching our kids character matters on and off the court. He leads by example and is teaching our kids to believe in themselves. Our community is blessed to have him.”
