PLAYERS TO WATCH
Hunter Meyers – Altus Sr.
Meyers, one of Altus’ most versatile players, plays first base and catcher and the ace on the pitching staff, boasting a top speed of 85. He has command and “very good movement on multiple pitches,” Altus coaches say. With his good pop time and arm, coaches expect him to see his share of pitches from behind the plate this year. Hunter bats in the middle of the lineup and has “good wheels” around the bases.
Jaxson Torrez – Blair Fr.
Torrez, whose Blair coaches say is an “outstanding teammate” will be a key player for the Broncs this season. He pitched a complete game while only allowing one run as he earned Big League Player of the Game during the fall season.
Adrian Gaytan – Frederick Sr.
Gaytan’s leadership and “ability to make everyone feel welcome” are commended by his coaches, auspicious skills for a player of his caliber. A superb athlete, the 6-foot-1 Gayton is known for his big arm and starred as Frederick’s quarterback last fall.
Rowdy Randall – Hollis Sr.
Of all that he brings to the table, right-hander Randall is known for his love for the game. The 6-foot-2 senior is committed to play at Western Texas College and can also play center field and short stop.
Mario Berumen – Navajo So.
On and off the field, Berumen does whatever he can to help his team be successful.
UNDERCLASSMEN TO WATCH
Dalton Wells – Frederick Fr.
Despite being in his first varsity year at Frederick, Wells has played baseball as much as anybody. Also an up-and-coming quarterback prospect behind Gaytan the freshman is expected to see significant playing time for the Bombers this spring.
Kreid McQueen – Hollis Fr.
McQueen will be Hollis’ starting catcher and can fill in at shortstop or pitch when necessary. His coaches boast his work ethic and ability to receive coaching. McQueen “puts the time in to be a better teammate and ball player,” they say.
UNSUNG HEROES
Kellan Hicks – Frederick Jr.
Hicks caught every Frederick pitch as a sophomore. He brings “an energy that is unmatched” and is expected to have a big year for the 2023 Bombers.
Sebastian Duran – Hollis Jr.
Duran’s coaches say he should receive more recognition for his play. Duran hit two home runs and started on the mound in a regional tournament win over Navajo last year, holding the Indians to one run. He “goes about his business and quietly” had a perfect record as a sophomore while making his way into the batting lineup.
Kasey Cross – Navajo So.
The first baseman is a “solid baseball player and a great teammate,” Navajo coaches say, and “a fun kid to be around.”
