Jesse Hopper
Western Oklahoma State College
Current freshman at Western Oklahoma State College Jesse Hopper, is a member of the rodeo team and a physical education and recreation major. Hopper, like many students who are in their first year of college, knew there would be an adjustment period coming out of high school, but like many of his peers, figuring out his schedule and staying on top of his assignments have been the biggest adjustments.
“The biggest adjustment from high school to college I’ve had is now that my schoolwork is online is making sure to remember to stay on top of all my assignments, so they don’t all pile up last minute,” said Hopper.
As a member of the rodeo team, Hopper said helping his team score points and meeting new people are two things he has enjoyed about being on the team.
“I really enjoy getting to meet new friends at all the rodeos and the pioneer point. I came to college to ride bulls, but I’ve helped the team fill in a few spots in other events to try and get are team points and that has also been a ton of fun,” said Hopper.
Finding a balance between being on the rodeo team and keeping up with the classroom work is something Hopper has accomplished with some work.
“The challenges you face rodeoing and going to college I feel like are the same with any other sport just juggling your classes along with work and still making sure you have time to go practice bull riding,” said Hopper.
His love for the sport drives him to do his best and help the team any way he can. The unpredictability and the challenge of competing make rodeo a sport unlike any other.
“The thing I love most about rodeo is in my event it really is just a one-on-one man versus beast, no matter if you win or lose it’s on you. There’s nobody else to blame if you don’t do your job and get ready for whatever they throw at you that weekend,” said Hopper.
Making the jump from high school to college can be difficult, but Hopper said it’s not that bad if you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone and ask for help when you need it.
“The only advice I’d have to give someone coming in as a freshman is ask a lot of questions. Once you think you know it all, that’s all you’ll know,” said Hopper. As for the future Hopper is working towards? The freshman said his goal is to complete his studies at WOSC and earn his degree. Eventually the goal is to reach the pinnacle of bull riding by competing in the NFR (National Rodeo Finals) with the best bull riders in the world.
