Since the age of three, Elgin High School’s Shay Spencer has had a football in his hands. For as long as he can remember, football has been part of his life and playing for Elgin High School has always been the goal.
“I love the team because it’s all I’ve ever known being raised in Elgin. I love my teammates because we are all like brothers and it’s not just a team out on the field it’s a family,” said Spencer.
The starting right tackle for the varsity football team is excited to get the season underway. Only a junior, Spencer has two years to prove to college recruiters he can play at the next level.
“I want to go play football in college and then come back to Elgin and coach,” said Spencer.
Football is not the only activity Spencer is involved in at Elgin HS. FFA has been part of his life since the eighth grade.
“I grew up around FFA and joined my eighth grade year. My grandpa was big into raising cattle his whole life so that really inspired me,” said Spencer.
With various activities to choose from in FFA, Spencer selected one that keeps his hands and mind busy solving problems and creating items for the team.
“In FFA I am on the ag mechanics team,” Spencer said. “The people are amazing and the limitless opportunities you have in the FFA.” At one time, Spencer showed cattle and pigs, but recently stopped to focus on other activities.
