As the first semester of the 2023 school year approaches, some students are preparing now for what’s to come this fall.
Madison Scallion is one of those student-athletes preparing for the upcoming semester as a cheerleader for WOSC. The former Hobart High School graduated said she is entering her sophomore year at WOSC and has enjoyed being part of the WOSC family.
“I started cheering as a sophomore in high school even though it was out of my comfort zone, I really wanted to try something new and ended up loving it. I picked Western because it felt like home. All the staff and instructors are very nice and want to you succeed. I’m very blessed to have the support from the staff and instructors here at western,” said Scallion.
As a freshman last year, Scallion said the biggest adjustment for her was going from a small school to a much larger school.
“Coming from a small school it was an adjustment seeing new people every day and not knowing them,” Scallion said. “I really love the point on campus! I love going to the point and playing pool. The point is a great place because you get to meet new people campus. My advice for an incoming freshman is to get involved! Getting involved will help you make new friends and potentially your lifelong best friends.”
College courses can be challenging, but Scallion said the faculty and professors have been great to work with and learn from.
“My favorite class I would say would be functions and modeling with Mrs. George. Even though I wasn’t the best at math she really helped me understand it. I love Mrs. George because she always put her students before herself and always makes sure we are doing okay not only in her class but also in our other classes,” said Scallion.
Once her time is up at WOSC, Scallion said she plans to attend another in-state school.
“After Western, I plan on going to SWOSU to finish my teaching degree there. My goal is to go back to Hobart and become the first African American women to teach there,” said Scallion.
