ALTUS BULLDOGS
Coach: JESSICA ROBINSON
OUTLOOK
Altus will try to maintain its momentum it had at the close of the 2022 season where it advanced to a regional tournament final and finished with a 21-19 record under head coach Jessica Robinson. “We had a good season last year making it to the regional finals, and we forced a final if-necessary game with Guthrie. Unfortunately, we came up short in that game to make it to state,” Robinson said. “Now we have a strong hard-working group returning this year, who all know the commitment level and work ethic needed to achieve success. I’m really proud of the direction we are heading, and that doesn’t happen without experienced leadership. These girls really just want to keep their heads down and work hard and let it show on the field.”
The Bulldogs will be led by VYPE Top 100 nominee Maci Hayes, a do-it-all all-district selection last year. “Maci is just an outstanding athlete. She is a great pitcher with good control who will carry us this year,” Robinson said. She also can play absolutely anywhere on the field. She has led us offensively the past two seasons, and she’s powerful and explosive at the plate.” Utility player Riley Hayes, an All-VYPE selection, will provide senior leadership for Altus. Hayes can play catcher, in the middle of the infield and in the outfield. “She is a true utility player,” Robinson said. “Riley has played a different position every year, because she’s willing to do whatever is needed to make her team better. She was an all-district outfielder last year, but she can catch and play middle infield as well. She leads quietly by setting a great example every day.” McKenzie Harris also returns after seeing significant playing time as a freshman. “McKenzie stepped up for us last year playing as a freshman. She is quick, and has a knack for getting on base,” Robinson said. “She’s not afraid to work hard, and is willing to step up anywhere she is needed. She also brings great energy and a positive attitude to our team every day.” Savannah Clothier provides leadership both on and off the field for the Bulldogs. “Savannah is one of those kids I just can’t give enough credit to,” Robinson said. “She’s a leader on and off the field. She works hard every single day, and sets an example for everyone. She’s a great teammate and a constant encourager.” Avery Wilks and Jenna Blackford will also provide key roles for Altus. Blackford is a three-sport athlete. “Jenna is an incredible three-sport athlete. However, Jenna’s character is what defines her as a person, not just an athlete,” Robinson said. “Jenna is one of the most incredible young people I’ve ever come across in the classroom and on the field. Jenna knows how to set an example and it comes naturally to her, which is why her teammates are often looking to her as an example.”
