Matthew Thompson, an Elk City High School 2023 graduate, had a standout career as a football player and one successful senior season running the sprint relays for the boys track team.
VYPE: What was the experience of being on a state semifinal team like?
MT: It was the best thing I could ask for. Being on that team was like being with family. We all had each other’s back and treated everyone like brothers.
VYPE: What went into your decision to join the track team this spring?
MT: I knew I was already decently fast going into it. One of my best buddies, Devin Simmons, the fastest kid in the state, recruited me and Cooper Patton to join. Me and Coop quit our previous sport to join something great. It was the best decision ever.
VYPE: What did you enjoy about racing?
MT: I really enjoyed the adrenaline rush from the races. It didn’t compare to anything I have ever done. Plus winning by over a second in a lot of the relays was always great!
VYPE: What are your future plans?
MT: I plan to attend Okmulgee OSUIT trade-school. I will further my education in HVAC (Heat and Air).
VYPE: Which teammate, past or present, has had the greatest impact on you?
MT: Cooper Patton. He is always dedicated and motivated to get better. We’ve grew up playing sports together and have always pushed each other to be great.
