Baseball is a game that requires a great deal of skill. For Navajo High School sophomore Mario Berumen, his talent in baseball allows him to play more than one position. Mario is a utility player, but also plays shortstop and pitcher.

To get to the level of performance where he’s at today, Mario said, “It has taken lots of hard work and dedication, as well as just spending a lot of time at the baseball field.”

In terms in what it means to represent Navajo High School every time he is on the baseball diamond, Mario said, “It means a lot because when I step on the field, I play not just to have fun, but to also represent my community and school, and make both my community and school proud.”

When asked what motivates him in the sport of baseball, Mario did not hesitate to answer. Mario said, “My family motivates me.”

Most high school athletes have a role model that they look up to.

“My role models are my cousin David, and my Coach,” Mario said. “They made me the person I am today.”

Every athlete has a memory that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. Mario recounts an event that sticks out the most. Mario said, “A favorite memory is going to regionals, and competing with top teams. 

As far as an opponent that Mario gets the most satisfaction beating, Mario said, “I most enjoy winning against Granite. It is satisfying to beat them, because they talk a lot.”

After graduating from Navajo High School, Mario plans on continuing his education.

“After high school, I plan on going to college, as well as playing college baseball,” Mario said.
