Kickin’ It Around with Altus’ Nathan Cuellar – Presented by Jackson County Orthopedic Clinic

High school student-athletes usually have a lot of things going on. Not only do they have to be at practice and games, but they also have to make sure they are getting their classwork completed. And then on top of that, if they have a job or want to hang out with friends, they have to try to squeeze that in as well. Nathan Cuellar says that while there is a lot going on, you have to make sure that it all gets done.

“The athlete that I am today has happened for two big reasons,” he said. “First, you have to be disciplined. You have to work hard and show up to practice when it is time. You also have to be able to manage your time wisely. Those things are what has really helped me.”

Nathan is a sophomore at Altus High School where he is a member of the cross country and soccer teams. He plays center back on the soccer field, a sport that he first started playing when he was three years old.

Throughout his life, Cuellar says that there have been a lot of people that have helped shape him into the person he is today.

“The biggest influences on my life would have to be my parents,” he said. “They are always there for me. Also, my Uncle Rolondo for breaking the high school cross country record and my big brother Victor Cuellar who was an All-State soccer player. My grandparents gave me the opportunity to chase my dreams and accomplish my goals. I am thankful for all of these people.”

There have been many teachers that Nathan has learned from over the years, but he says that there is one teacher that he enjoyed the most.

“Mr. Avila would have to be my favorite teacher,” he said. “He is laid back and always respectful to each of his students.”

Along with playing sports for Altus, Nathan is enrolled in religion education classes at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He is also involved with a Sunday soccer league in Altus.

“I feel that playing with them strengthens my knowledge of the game along with my endurance.”
