Amber-Pocasset’s Kemiah Slaton – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Bryan’s Car Corner

By Derrick Smith

Every athlete knows that there is some level of work and time that has to be put in to become better at their sport. But more than just putting in the work, they also have to fight through the tough times and the speed bumps that happen along the way.

Kemiah Slaton is a freshman at Amber-Pocasset High School. She is a setter on the varsity volleyball team. Though she has only played for three years, she has made her share of mistakes but has not let those keep her down.

“For me to get where I am has taken a lot,” she said. “It has required determination and willfulness. Every failure I have just helps me understand what I did wrong so I can fix it. That goes for on and off the court.”

Slaton says that there are a few people that she considers to be her role models because they have helped her become the person and the athlete she is today.

“I have been blessed with the people in my life,” she said. “My parents always push me to do better, no matter what I am doing. Also, my coaches know my weaknesses and help me improve on those. Another person is Mrs. Clawson, one of my teachers. She has taught me how to be a better leader and has helped me improve on my social skills.”

Throughout her career, Kemiah has made a lot of great memories and she says that it is hard to choose just one favorite.

“I have had some great experiences over the years by spending time together with teammates at practices and growing our friendships,” she said. “Also being able to play the game I love and having fun while doing so.”

Outside of sports, Slaton has become a part of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America group.

“FCCLA has helped me come out of my comfort zone,” she said. “It has also helped me become a better person. I am also involved in cheer and was captain of the team last season.”
