OFFENSE
After finishing a top their district last season, the Minco Bulldogs will look to continue their winning ways in 2021. Head coach Brock Wardlaw knows that won’t be an easy task after graduating several key players last year but, he believes his Bulldogs will be up to the task. “We will be very young,” he said. “But we have great potential, and we are looking forward to seeing what this group will do.” The Minco offense will be led by quarterback Reed McMurtrey (5-10, 160, So.). McMurtrey did see some playing time last year as a freshman, so this spread offense will be familiar to him as he steps into a larger role. Minco will look to play with pace offensively and will try to run the rock to set up opportunities in the passing game. While much of this offense might be young, the Bulldogs do have a pair of two-year starters along the offensive line in the Luke Clement (6-2, 250, Sr.) and Bryce Williams (6-2, 230, Sr.). Joining Clement and Williams up front is the big body of Eli Kirkes (6-4, 330, So.).
DEFENSE
Defensively, it’s all about stopping the run for Minco. The Bulldogs will use a base 4-4 defense to load the box and keep teams from running the ball. Along the defensive line look for tackle Eli Kirkes to use his big frame to take up space and move guys around so the linebackers can get in the backfield and make plays. In that linebacker corps, Hunter Mulanax (5-10, 180, Jr.) returns after putting together a solid sophomore season. Reed McMurtrey and Ben Burchfield (5-10, 150, So.) will lead the coverage in the secondary for Minco. If this young Minco roster can improve on a week to week to basis as they gain more experience, look for the Bulldogs to compete for another district title. Along with head coach Brock Wardlaw, the Minco coaching staff includes Brady Wardlaw, Colby Spears, Stebem Whalen, and Waylon Heavin.
