OFFENSE

Hobart head coach Colt Allison feels good about the returning players he has but he also knows that getting the new starters up to speed will be key for Hobart to find success in 2021. On offense, Hobart will be looking to find new starters at quarterback, tight end, and at four of the five offensive line positions. One guy who could slide into the quarterback spot is Wyatt Shelburne (6-0, 165, Sr.). Shelburne played receiver last year, catching 17 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Allison said Shelburne is a solid athlete who leads by example and feels that Shelburne will have a good year at either QB or receiver. Whoever takes over at quarterback will have plenty of weapons to work with. Tommy Lancaster (5-10, 175, Sr.) returns at running back after rushing for 537 yards and seven touchdowns. Also, Gunnar Jones (5-9, 165, Jr.) and Tyler Stricker (6-0, 165, Sr.) return at wide receiver. Those two guys combined to catch 44 passes for 663 yards and four touchdowns.

DEFENSE

Defensively, Hobart is all about getting people to ball. The Bearcats use a 5-2 base defense that stresses stopping the run first and foremost. Leading that five-man defensive line is Vype Top 100 player Rett Duff (6-4, 250, Sr.). Duff recorded 48 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three sacks last year. At linebacker, Tyler Stricker (6-0, 165, Sr.) should be in line to grab one of those starting spots after tallying 34 tackles last year. The secondary has the most depth returning from last year’s team. Wyatt Shelburne returns at free safety. He registered 65 tackles, one interception, and five pass breakups in 2020. Joining Shelburne in the secondary is Gunnar Jones (5-9, 165, Jr.). Jones had 18 tackles, five interceptions, four pass breakups and a forced fumble as a sophomore last season. Coach Allison called Jones the best defensive back he’s coached at Hobart. “He has a great instinct for the ball and an uncommon ability to baith the QB into a throw,” Allison said of Jones. Joining Allison on the Bearcat coaching staff are Travis Sims, Brett Barnett, Corey Mooney, and Cason Montgomery.
