Averie Brooksher

Duncan High School

Every golfer will tell you the mental game and the short game are two aspects of golf you must begin to master if you’re going to be successful. Duncan High School’s Averie Brooksher has worked to improve in both areas and the work is paying off.

“The part of my game I have had to work to improve the most is my mental game. I’ve had to work on not being so hard on myself after a bad shot and learn how to laugh it off and move on. Everyone hits bad shots you just have to learn how to recover from it and focus on the upcoming ones,” Brooksher said. “The tournament I’ve enjoyed the most this season is our tournament at Weatherford. I placed 6th after having a rough start on the first nine holes.

Now in her senior year, Brooksher got her start in golf when she entered high school and is proud to represent DHS in competition.

“I started golf officially my freshman year. What I love most about being a student-athlete at DHS is the encouraging support system and bonds I’ve created,” said Brooksher.

Brooksher said the team is performing good and she loves being around her teammates.

“Our team is looking great this year. If we keep playing well and practicing in our free time, we definitely have a shot at winning state. What I love most about my teammates is the bonds we’ve created; we are a very close team and love to see each other succeed,” said Brooksher.

Aside from golf, Brooksher is involved in STUCO, National Honor Society, Superintendent Student Advisory Council, Key Club, and Jolly Jill’s. The senior has plans for life after high school.

“After I graduate, I will be attending the University of Oklahoma where I plan on pursuing a degree in marketing,” said Brooksher. When she’s not in school you can usually find the future graduate playing holes, hangout with friends and family, and going shopping. Brooksher said she would one day like to return to Gaillardia Country Club and play their course.
