Weatherford’s Mom of the Month – Jamie Nelson – Presented by More than Medicine

Parents of high school athletes do their best to be there to support their kids when they compete. While it may not always work out perfectly, it helps to have a solid support system that can help fill in when needed. Jamie Nelson says that she does her best to be there, but when she cannot, she has people that save the day.

“If I’m not at work, I’m there,” she said. “My husband and my in-laws are the best. They attend even when I am not able to. Weatherford also has some awesome parents that always send me videos or text updates. They’ll never know how much that means to me.”

Jamie has two children. Paisley is a senior at Weatherford High School. She is involved in cheer and has been since she was a toddler. Hunter is a sophomore and plays basketball and baseball.

Nelson is an employee at Clayton Homes of El Reno. In her spare time, when she is not at one of her kids’ events, she enjoys taking care of her chickens, working in her garden, and playing dominos. She also volunteers with CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates.
“Being an advocate for children is something that is very dear to my heart. I encourage everyone to check into CASA and see what it’s all about.”

Along with being at their games and events, Jamie also finds other ways to stay involved.

“I’m Secretary of the cheer booster club and I try to stay involved in the Tip In club as well,” she said. “We have a great supportive community and I never want to take that for granted.  These other parents make it easy to stay involved.”

While they have not always lived in Weatherford, Jamie says that it is the place that she knows she wants to be.

“Weatherford is home,” she said. “We’ve lived in other places for my husband’s job and while I’m thankful for the memories there, nothing can compare to Weatherford. From the community, coaches, teachers, students, and principals, I truly feel we have the best around. A community that supports each other’s families & kids & truly wants the best for each other, that’s hard to find. When you are lucky enough to find that, hang on to it. Those are your people.”
