Dickson’s Jurnie Harmon – Presented by Owens Insurance Agency

Dickson High School senior Jurnie Harmon was born to be a Comets cheerleader.

“I first got into cheer when I would go to my brother’s football games and I would watch the cheerleaders,” Harmon said. “My mom saw how much I loved it and put me into it. . . I wasn’t terrible at first, but I definitely needed work, but with practice, I kept getting better.”

Harmon suffered a significant road block to her cheer career last year when she suffered a concussion..

“After I got a concussion, I was scared to stunt again, but with my amazing teammates, I had enough trust that I overcame my fear and got confident with it again,” Harmon said. “I learned that accidents happen, and you can grow from them. I would say that it did change me for the better.”

Harmon hopes to serve as an inspiration to others.

“The reason I love cheering so much is because I used to look up to the cheerleaders that I would watch, and I love to do that for the little kids now,” Harmon said.

Leadership is an important component to Harmon’s personality. When she isn’t cheering, she serves as president of Dickson’s FCCLA chapter, attends FCA, is a member of national honor society and is a student council representative.

“I would say all of my activities are equally important to me. It’s hard to make time for all of them, but I just try to make time,” Harmon said. “Leadership has always been something that has been important to me. That is why FCCLA is so important to me. It teaches on how to be a better leader.”

After high school, Harmon hopes to obtain both her cosmetology license and a degree in business. She wants to open her own clothing boutique and a salon.
