9 Questions with Duncan’s Julia Haney – Presented by Rib Crib

By: Hunter Ferguson

Duncan tennis player Julia Haney recently completed an interview with VYPE.

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My personal goals for this year include maintaining motivation to be the best I can be, striving to qualify and win at the state level, and consistently maintain good grades.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory was during off season tennis. We would play flag football on Fridays, and for the last game we had a Super Bowl. Instead of playing in the field next to the tennis courts like we normally do, we went to our school football field and played there. My team won and Coach Cobble had made us all Super Bowl rings made out of foil.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Although all of my teammates have helped me grow in some form or fashion, I would have to say my best friend Jadyn has had the biggest impression on me. She is always encouraging me to do my best and keep my head up high.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part of being on the Duncan Tennis team is getting the chance to have a family outside of home. When we are on the courts it seems like a whole new life. We laugh, bicker, and make memories just like a family would, and it’s truly a blessing.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I participate in many community service projects, including Bark in The Park, the Rotary Auction, and when I get the chance I help out with events hosted by Gabriel’s House.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

I have the privilege of being in several clubs and campus groups at Duncan High School. These include Reflections (our school show choir), SSAC (Superintendent Student Advisory Club), SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), FCA (Fellow Christian Athletes), NHS (National Honors Society), and Key Club. I enjoy being a part of every single club I am in. They push me to step outside of my comfort zone, and help me focus on the people in my community.

VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

Being a tennis player is a mind game of its own. When you are struggling on the court all you know to do is to keep pushing no matter how tiring or hard it gets. Being able to control my emotions and keeping a positive attitude is a lesson I relearn everyday.

VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

The best advice that anyone has given me would be from my grandpa. He was my best friend, and he always told me to forgive even if it isn’t deserved.

VYPE: Who inspires you and why?

Darren Cobble would be the person that inspires me the most. As my coach, he pushes me to succeed. Coach Cobble is one of the most patient people I know and no matter what anyone does he is always quick to forgive. Without him the tennis team wouldn’t be a team.

VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.

I would like to thank my mom. No matter how busy she gets she always finds a way to support me in the things I love to do. She never fails to be there when I turn around, and she always has advice to give me when I am struggling. I couldn’t have made it this far without her, and I truly believe she is the reason I am who I am today.
