High school athletes put in a lot of work so they are prepared when game day arrives. Even with all that preparation, sometimes, unexpected things happen that have to be dealt with. Abbie Savage saw that happen first hand and she says that the way her team stepped up made her very proud.

“This was a few years ago, but when Covid was a huge thing, we didn’t get to play in every game because of quarantine,” she recalled. “I remember playing in the Velma-Alma Tournament and we had just won a big game to advance to the championship game. While our coach went up to the stands, our superintendent informed him that some of our team was quarantined. That didn’t stop the coach or the team. While I and a couple of other girls didn’t get to be there for that game, our team stepped up. The best thing was they won the championship. They worked hard and hustled the whole game with just six girls. That would definitely be one of my favorite highlights because they showed up and worked as hard as they would if we other girls were there. They never backed down. They faced adversity and strived.”

Savage is a senior at Amber Pocasset High School. She plays guard on the basketball team and is also a member of the Future Farmers of America, the National Honor Society, the Technology Student Association, the Student Council, the yearbook, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Savage has worked hard to get to where she is today. She says that if you work your hardest and keep putting in the work, you will see things happen.
“A key to success is putting in work when no one is watching,” she said. “You aren’t always going to do the right thing, we are human we make mistakes, but if you show up every day and put in extra time, you will then see your success. Coach T always says ‘the game will love you back’. You can’t just come to practice every day. You have to want to be at practice every day and then stay after or get there early and put more time into your sport.”

After she graduates high school in May, Abbie plans to go to school to become a dental hygienist.
