Duncan Area basketball players to watch – Presented by Marcus McEntire, State Representative

Boys

Zane Petty – Duncan

Received second-team All-Region as a sophomore. Looks to have another solid season this year.

Rylan Miller – Empire

Rylan has been a consistent player since he was a freshman. He was named to the conference All-Star team last year. Rylan is expected to continue with great production this season.

Crue Garrett – Velma-Alma

A three-year starter, Crue plays point guard and does a great job at it. He is also an outstanding leader both on and off the court.

Girls

KK Miller – Duncan

KK will be the lone senior on the team this season. She will be called on to set the tone in practice and games with her energy on the offensive and defensive ends. KK is a great athlete and a three-sport star.

Kenley Lemons & Kaydence Smith – Empire

Kenley is a natural point guard. She wants to run the show and she thrives at doing so. She sees the floor well and can get to the lane when she needs to. She’s a difference-maker and will definitely be one to watch. Kaydence is a physically and mentally tough player. Most nights she will be the strongest guard on the floor which makes her an extremely tough match-up. Her leadership skills have evolved and her shooting range has expanded.

Whitney Wade – Marlow

She is an outstanding team leader and a great teammate. She was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder in the 2021-22 season.

Rylee McLain – Velma-Alma

Rylee is in her senior year and has been a varsity player since her freshman year. She is a terrific leader. She can pretty much play any position. Rylee understands her role well and is a great example for her teammates. Her energy, excitement, and determination will be a huge asset to the team this season.

UNSUNG HEROES

Boys

Nicholas Spigner – Empire

Nicholas is a three-year starter coming into his senior year. Whether in practice or a game, he is the first guy to dive on lose balls, take charges, or the one in their fighting for a rebound.

Girls

Emery Kowalik – Empire

Emery is a true team-first kid. Always keeping spirits up and a joy to be around, but definitely not afraid to get in the mix when the whistle blows.

Kendall Kizarr – Marlow

Kendall is a senior that never misses anything and she is a great teammate. She does the little things like taking charges and diving on balls all the time.

Addy Smith – Velma-Alma

Smith is a very tough competitor. She never backs down from a challenge. She can guard in position on the court.

UNDERCLASSMEN TO WATCH

Boys

Daveon Carr – Duncan

Daveon is very athletic and a hard worker. He will look to make an impact this season.

Easton Beck and Carson Carrio – Empire

Easton will be coming into his sophomore year with a year of starting at the varsity level already under his belt. Carson is a freshman who will start as shooting guard. He led the junior high team last year to a 12-2 record.

Jackson Lohrer – Velma-Alma

A dedicated student of the game that can shoot, drive, and pass way above average for a freshman.

Girls

Hannah Woods – Duncan

Hannah will be handling the ball a lot this year, and the team will look for her to set the offense up and control the tempo. She will have no problem handling that job.

Keira Pineda & Mia Curtis – Empire

Keira is a quiet guard that let’s her play do the talking. No one is going to outwork her, her quickness is expected to help the defense this season. She also has s true jump shot that she likes to use off the dribble.

Carson Lovett – Marlow

Will push to be the starting point guard as a freshman. She is an athlete with a lot of natural abilities.

Azya Pemberton – Velma-Alma

Azya saw some minutes on the varsity team as a freshman. She is a great athlete that can run the floor well and is a pesky defender. As Azya plays more minutes her confidence should build throughout the season. By the end of the year, she should be a top priority on the opponent’s scouting report.
