Altus Teacher of the Month – Victoria Green – Presented by Jackson County Memorial Hospital

In her third year of teaching, Victoria Green is teaching Psychology, AP Psychology, Sociology, and Financial Literacy as well as BCTV (Bulldog Community Television) where her students create videos and news for the high school. Mrs. Green landed her position with Altus Public Schools almost immediately after graduating from college.

“I got my start right here in Altus. I attended Western Oklahoma State College where I got my Associates and later my bachelors in Psychology at Cameron University. I actually had only been graduated for a couple days when I was starting to wonder what am I going to do and out of nowhere the Psychology position opened at the high school and I knew right then, that is what I wanted to do,” Green said. “Altus High is the right place for me because it has a wide range of students from all over. It is big enough to do great things but small enough to still feel like a family.”

As an educator, Green said it’s the students that she enjoys the most.

“The thing I enjoy most about being an educator is meeting all the different students and learning all the different stories. The resilience that some of these students have is truly inspiring. Watching them rise above the odds is an incredible experience,” Green said. “Some of them come in no matter what they are facing at home and are ready to learn and take that knowledge with them, to help them grow and achieve amazing things. It can be heartbreaking when a student comes to you and lays it all out there and asks for help but at the same time it’s nice to know they found someone they finally felt safe enough to confide in and understand them.”

Career paths are usually feature a few twists and turns. For Green, that came pretty early in her teaching career.

“My plans were actually to always be a school counselor and I still plan to attend grad school one day. I remember sitting at my desk as a billings clerk after I graduated wondering what in the world I would do, when I got the text about the position being opened it was a very exciting moment hoping and praying this would be it. When I realized I would get to teach others about Psychology it was a great feeling,” said Green.

In her free time, Green said she enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter.

We have all sorts of animals including 500 goats, sheep, cattle, horses, chickens, cats, and dogs. During the summer I personally love working in my garden. I also enjoy attending rodeos and team ropings where my husband and our friends participate. Being around good company is the highlight of my days.
