Navajo Softball Spotlight – Kynnedy Guthrie – Presented by Jackson County Orthopedic Clinic

Kynnedy Guthrie is a sophomore pitcher at Navajo High School, where the ace pitcher is already one of the better pitchers in Class A. This season, Guthrie is No. 1 in the class with a 73.33 strike percentage and a 23.69 ground-out percentage. Guthrie also has a 2.01 ERA and is second in the class with an average of .14 walks per inning.

“[Guthrie] is a great athlete with a lot of grit,” coach Kriston Cusher said. “She has a lot of swag when she steps on the mound and always works hard. Her love for the game is one of her biggest strengths. She is constantly going to camps, lessons, and playing travel ball to improve her game.”

Last season, Guthrie was named the pitcher of the year for the conference after a season in which Navajo advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history. This year, Guthrie has pitched nearly 70 innings with 77 strikeouts. After three-straight wins at the regionals tournament, Navajo is heading back to the state tournament.

Guthrie also competes on the school’s basketball and slow-pitch teams.

Outside of athletics, Guthrie is active in FCA, FFA, NHS while carrying a 4.0 GPA. In her spare time, Guthrie offers pitching, hitting, and fielding lessons for local kids.

Upon graduation, Guthrie would like to continue playing softball at the collegiate level while studying for a degree in criminology, criminal justice, or education. Guthrie credits some of her success on the field to watching the University of Oklahoma’s softball team play.

Her favorite player is Jayda Coleman for the Sooners.

“I really learned a lot from watching [OU] play softball,” Guthrie said. “Jayda’s energy is just unbelievable to watch, especially getting to watch it at the college world series.”
