Cameron University ROTC Spotlight – Tyiesha Carrol – Presented by Army ROTC

Cameron University junior Tyiesha is originally from Newport News, Virginia and is a graduate of Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Shortly after graduating high school, Carroll enlisted into the U.S. Army. After spending a few years in the military, she decided to become an officer, but before she could commission, Carroll completed requirements for the “Green to Gold Active Duty” option and enrolled into college at Cameron University.

“I decided to attend Cameron University over other schools for several, beneficial reasons. My primary reason is already being stationed and living in the Ft. Sill area. I didn’t have to spend money moving to another area and the cost of living in Lawton is relatively inexpensive. My next reason for wanting to attend Cameron University is because before attending, I’ve spoken with some of the professors at the school; they seem to care a lot about educating their students and will take time to help them understand what is being taught. The class sizes are not overwhelming, which fosters an easier learning environment,” Carroll said. “Finally, I also wanted to be a part of the ROTC program here at Cameron. What I enjoy most is that the program doesn’t make you feel like just a ‘number’ because it is relatively smaller than other ROTC programs, which allows Cadre and senior cadets to better assess a cadet’s performance and potential, give feedback, and administer aid as necessary, often enabling us to become well-rounded Commissioned Officers in the Army.”

Carroll plans to make the military a fulltime career and continue serving for as long as possible.

“I plan on continuing to stay in the military and serving my country for as long as possible. Coming from a military family, I aspired to carry on my family’s tradition and legacy because both my father served and my grandfather on my mother’s side served,” Carroll said. “Once I commission, I would love to be branched into Medical Services or continue my career in the Military Intelligence Corps as an intelligence analyst. I am all about supporting the mission and people as much as possible.”

Carroll said Cameron University is a great place for students because of the learning environment in every class.

“The campus is slightly smaller, so it’s easier to stay focused on your goals and be better involved in your college experience. Also, there are a myriad of programs to help you become proficient in your field of study,” said Carroll.
